FOR SALE: Grand National, SOS, and Zebra Vinyls

Greetings! I am looking to sell my JBT vinyls, as I don't have a record player and will probably never have one Vinyls have been stored in an airtight container, indoors since purchasing. See notes below on individual specs.

Sunrise Over Sea: Vinyls have never been played, lyric book is included and in perfect condition. Unfortunately, the jacket has been damaged where the inside flap is glued. The glue has come undone, but the sleeve is still in fine condition. I can email pictures to anyone who is seriously interested. No. 150 of 1000.

SOLD-Zebra: Perfect condition, inside and out. Vinyl has never been played. Corners of jacket are mint. Will throw in Zebra single CD to purchaser.

Grand National: Front of album cover is signed "Respect to you!" by John, Michael, and Shannon. Vinyls have never been played and sleeves are mint. The corners are soft, particularly the upper left. I have the poster that was included, but it's a bit wrinkled. Again, will send detailed pictures to anyone interested. No. 109 of 1000.

Please email me at kelly.mccord559@gmail.com if you are interested. I have no idea what these are worth, so will take offers until next Wednesday, April 3 because I will be out of town and unable to ship until then. I'm not looking to make a bunch of money, just want them to go to someone who will actually use the vinyls.

Hey everyone, in case some of you don't know me by now.....I have extra copies of all JBT vinyls. I am now down to my last "extra" copy opf both GN and SOS....
I am selling them and they are on ebay at the moment. The only reason they are listed so high is because me and my wife are trying to get custody of my beautiful 4 year old neice and need some funds for that process. (It is a very long story)

I would want to let them go to someone in the JBT fam if possible. Please let me know by PMing me!

John Butler, Caroline & In her Skin

I just watched a movie called ‘In Her Skin’ and it finally explained to me what the song ‘Caroline’ by John Butler Trio is truly about.
For those who have not yet seen this movie (In Her Skin; 2009) I really recommend you do. It is based on a true story in Australia (1999). It is about the murder/death of Rachel Barber. I have to give away who was to blame for this murder, so sorry for ruining it for you, but it was Rachel’s baby sitter, Caroline.
Caroline is a woman who has problems with both her parents and her own appearance. She just wanted to be loved and be told by her parents that they were proud of her. Rachel, in Caroline’s eyes, is a ‘perfect skinny dancer’ who everyone loves; Caroline being some what ‘jealous’ of the relationship Rachel has with her parents and boy friend; in a result of the reasoning for murdering her.
John Butler’s lyrics, ‘and if life and death were such a game, why did they all make such a fuss?’ in his song ‘Caroline’ mostly explains how Caroline thinks. In a way, to get rid of such a ‘beautiful’ human being like Rachel, maybe that might make her more beautiful.. in a way of less competition.
You really have to watch this movie to understand the full story and how Caroline thinks. Oh and the opening of the movie is ‘What You Want’ and they also play it again at the funeral scene and at credits. Caroline scenes play ‘Caroline’ and you hear ‘Ocean’ playing in some different scenes; so I assure you that this movie plays excellent music!
Oh oh, and John Butler also acts in it!! He is a busker playing ‘Ocean’ in the background in front if Luna Park. It zooms up to him before he gets given a coffee by one of the actresses. Here is a sneak peak

(Sorry if this isn’t written well. I have never wrote something like this before.)

Hello everyone.
Been a while since I posted but just thought I'd put this out there. Does anybody else get the feeling that JB may be getting ready to go solo? We have had practically zero JBT activity all year. I think there may be one upcoming JBT gig in October?! Other than that we've had Tin Shed Tales solo tour (which has now been extended) and a live release of this. Loads of vids where only JB is present and now this new version of Ocean (which obviously doesn't concern Nicky and Byron).
Just spitballing and wondering if anyone else has had the same thought?

John Butler infulences

I have been listening to JB for a very long time now and have sort of stumbled on this idea that John Butlers music is quite similar to Bag Pipe music. The melodies and general sound of the music is quite similar and I think JB may have been influenced by Pipes and Drums. Has anybody else noticed this? Can anybody Confirm this?

It is part of my DNA. It conveys all things I can’t put into words.
Life, loss, love, spirit. As I evolve so too does ‘Ocean’. The song was first recorded as part of my first album/cassette,
“Searching For Heritage“, which I sold when I busked, then for my first self-titled studio album 12 years ago – “John Butler (1998)”.
The song has been watched online incredibly over 25 million times in various formats, nearly always live, be it from MusicMax Sessions or from one of the many festivals I have had the pleasure to play. I’d like to thank you for your continued support over all these years; it means so much to me. I would like to thank you by offering this first studio recording of ‘Ocean’ in over a decade as a free download.
I recorded it in my favourite studio, The Compound here in Fremantle Western Australia, a studio you helped me build.
This marks just another fleeting moment in a career that is very much ongoing.
I look forward to bringing you many new songs and albums into the future and continuing this amazing journey with you ALL.
THANK YOU

Instrumental mixes

I recently found an item posted on ebay: 2 CD-Rs, the first containing the standard 15 April Uprising tracks, and the second containing instrumental mixes of those 15 songs.

Here's the link to the item, and a screenshot of the listing:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/John-Butler-Trio-April-Uprising-Instrumentals-U-S-PROMO-2-cdrs-RARE-/180911557730?pt=Music_CDs&hash=item2a1f2b4c62#ht_500wt_1054

$45 is a ridiculous ask for the above, so I was wondering if anyone on her knows of any instrumentals floating around, or if there is any chance of some getting bounced for us forum folk (or for an official release) by JB's crew or whatever.

I personally am particularly interested in the possibility of hearing some of JB's songs without the vocals from an aspiring audio engineer's point of view (for the past couple of months I have been putting together a folio of properly recorded and mixed songs using Pro Tools as a part of my uni application). JB's work has always been a big inspiration for me (in working on my folio and otherwise in playing guitar), and his genius layering of instrumental tracks (for example the banjo backing behind the lead acoustic guitars in Nowhere Man and Seeing Angels; the various mallet instruments layering up chord progressions in songs such as Cmon Now, Better Than and Nowhere Man) has always intrigued me. I am sure that there is more little things to each and every one of John's studio recordings that I have not yet noticed (just a couple of days ago I heard for the first what sounds like vinyl scratching towards the end of What You Want). As I said, it is things like this which keep me hooked on John's music.

My point is, I think that having access to complete instrumental songs would be a great way for me (and the rest of us!) to (re)discover more about JB's work, and for me personally to ultimately improve my audio engineering skills.

So I'm putting the call out here (mostly to Chris and Tom as you guys would be the most likely to know about this in my mind) for information on any instrumental mixes of JBT songs, or the possibility of some mixes being made available in the future. I'm sure I'm not the only person who would be interested in hearing some of these.

Cheers,
pomes27

John Butler's Favourite Songs

I stumbled on these lists a while ago, and thought I'd share them here with the other forum folk. It's nice to see John's comments on the some of the songs he's covered over the years, as also to find out what John is referencing in his own lyrics (see below).

From Triple J's Top Tens (date unknown):

Bob Marley and The Wailers - Get Up, Stand Up
There are so many Marley songs that are worthy but this one just makes me go, "f**k ya! Jah righteousness. Saying it how it is bruthas." When their music hits, you feel no pain. It's part of Marley's genius; hooky as hell, inspiring and making people shake it.

Midnight Oil - Short Memory
I could have picked 'Beds Are Burning' but there's something about the sinister riff in this song and the vocal delivery. One the best aussie bands ever. FULL STOP.

Toots and The Maytals - Funky Kingston
Ever since I heard this song on a cassette with a cover that said "Reggae Hits on '75" I was hooked. It's my fav of favs. Funky, soulful. Toots nailed that shit hard. I've asked countless of DJs to play this song for me.

The Police - Message In A Bottle
The bomb. That's all that needs to be said.

Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Classic to the bone. This is some of the most funkiest music on the planet. And the man played most of the instruments himself. Living legend. Werd to the wonder!

The Beatles - Come Together
This is one of my favourite Beatles albums and it's the opening track. Surreal lyrics, great riff, hell tone. We play a version of this song. I want to play it now.

Simon and Garfunkel - Cecilia
Have you heard the rhythm bed on this track? It is the shit! Love it. So percussive. Awesome songs. Brilliant harmonies. And Garfunkel's fro... Hello!

Jane's Addiction - Jane Says
My older brother first showed me this song when I was like 16 or something. I'd never heard of these guys and they blew me away. I became a massive Janes fan after that and so wanted to be Dave Navarro. Well before he did that bunk MTV, INXS , reality TV, competition, judging, shit in a box program. Did I just say that?

U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
A classic U2 song. Great drum intro. Awesome chorus. Anthemic I think is the best description of this song. I had all their albums. They along with Midnight Oil made me realise that music was definitely a tool of the revolution.

Jimi Hendrix & A band of Gypsys - Machine Gun
This is when Jimi started getting funk dawg on the shit and for me it's his best stuff. Hendrix's great songs and sublime guitar over R&B funk beats and bass lines. Listen to the special edition double cd version of A Band of Gypsy's at Filmore East 1969. 'Machine' kicks ass on that and it's not the version that was put on the original release. This was a live record to get Jimi outta his record deal. After that management persuaded Jimi in a different direction . A beautiful yet fleeing moment in time.

Sidenote:
Ever wondered about the following Groovin' Slowly lyrics?

...
Play that Funky Kingston, you know it's our favourite song
...

From Myspace Feature Playlist (08.04.2010):

Missy Elliot - Work It
missy elliot is the mostest bad assness. I love her and every she and timberland have done . Under construction is one of my all time favorite albums ever.

Rage Against The Machine - Mic Check
f--king awesome band . Saw them love a couple of years ago for the first time and man i’ve never been the same .by far one of the best bands ever. Respect RATM!!!!!this song kicks some serious ass.

Damian Marley - Move!
What an artist, lyricist and beat programmer. When this guy gets together with his brother stephen marley ,magic happens.welcome to jam rock is one of the all time best contemporary raggae/ dancehall albums for sure.

Bob Marley and The Wailers - Get Up, Stand Up
do I have to say anything about this song or artist/s. Legandery if you haven't heard this you’ve been living under a boring, culture less rock. Sorry but its true!

Stevie Wonder - Superstition
Booooooom this is one of the best songs ever written by A LIVING LEGEND! He got funk , he got soul ,he got mojo outta control. Werd up to the king of wonder.

Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child
a prophet on par with Marley. One of the only guitarist in the world who can make his guitar speak the heavens and scream the hells while actually playing a good song. Jimi was some of a blip on the radar screen. We’ll never be able to work out what quiet happen . But we’ll be always thankful for it.

The Cure - Pictures of You
BEAUTIFUL SONG!!!! Robert smith is an awesome song writer with a great group of band mates. There are volumes of great albums by these love cats .also another great song

Gillian Welch - Caleb Meyer
part if the old time revival I guess you could say. She really brings the old time country folk feel alive in a truly unique , and mordewrn way. She and david rawlings definitely changed my life.

James Brown - Get Up Offa That Thing
Great song. Great artist. Great band. HE CHANGED THE WORLD! PERIOD. FULL STOP. THERE IS NO HIP HOP WITH OUT JAMES MUTHAFUCKING BROWN!! AND YES THIS IS DELIBERATE CAPS.

U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
another great song by a great band with their heart in the right place. Good on them . And hey they keep getting bigger. Who’d a thunk !!

Beastie Boys - Root Down

The Beatles - Come Together

Also, here is a list of the songs from above of which I have copies of John playing covers.
Hi,

I'm experiencing a problem with this album. I bought it in France on itune and it happens that the song are not the one they are supposed to be. For example I don't have danny boy it's "Zebra" , "Joseph and paddy rose" is" treat yo mama", "we drove to kalgoorlie" is "I use to get high" and since I have those twice I think that rather than having 2 CD I got twice the same CD. Have you also experienced that problem with this album and what can I do?
When I read the previews on itune they made the same "mistakes" as my own cds.

John to Support Ron Paul?

I have emailed kea@jarrahrecords.com to get John Butler involved with this Ron Paul scandal that is unfolding before our eyes! Ron Pauls sloga " Revolution" is also Johns slogan. Email her as a Ron Paul fan and ask John to HELP with this battle for Liberty & Justice!!!! Here are Johns lyrics for his song Revolution. We want John to come play for a Ron Paul crowd. Please help John.

Revolution Lyrics
Performed by John Butler Trio
Review The Song (3)
Send "Revolution" Ringtone to your Cell
So tell me family now what do you think ?
Watch it all go down the great big sink.
Watch how the scum it rises to the top.
Don't you wonder when it's all gonna stop?
Sometimes I wonder how we do sleep,
serving the dodgy companies we keep.
All kicking and scrounging for the very first place -
dictionary definition of a rat race.
Pay off those losers we elect to lead,
stealing from the mouths that we're meant to feed.
Enslaving the very clothes upon my back,
I feel the sting but I hear no crack, no crack, I'm saying

Running through the fire, running through the flame,
running through the hatred, pushing through the blame,
running through the hopelessness and shame,
revolution already underway.

Big Heavy Pirates man digging those holes,
messing with something that they can't control.
Tresspassing lands where they don't belong,
all I hear is screaming where there once were songs.
I got my brothers there fighting those wars,
fighting over scraps and scraping their souls.
Under a blanket of a fire and pride
that can't keep us warm for the cold inside,
inside, I'm saying

Running through the fire, running through the flame,
running through the hatred, pushing through the blame,
running through the hopelessness and shame,
revolution already underway.

So tell me when you think we're gonna rise?
Wake from this slumber wipe the tears from our eyes?
Yes from this nightmare yes I must now wake,
open my fist my destiny I take !
Good people sick and tired of being pushed around,
we call them kings but I see no crown.
Tell me when you think we'll just stand up,
say enough is enough is enough, enough I'm saying

Running through the fire, running through the flame,
running through the hatred, pushing through the blame,
running through the hopelessness and shame,
revolution already underway.

Take back your feet, take back your hands.
Take back your words, take back your lands.
Take back your heart, take back your pride.
Don't got to run, don't got to hide.

Time frame for a new disc?

I see in Tom's post about the solo tour JB is going to be doing in Oz that 4 new songs are being bounced around for the set list......so I was wondering what the time frame is for a new JBT disc to be recorded? If they will be jamming in the studio in the near future, would that make a release possible as early as beginning of 2013?? Anyone heard any news pertaining to this?

Hear Me Cry Lyrics

The past few days I've had the lyrics "We sure as hell ain't gonna figure it out tonight" stuck in my head, and I could not work out what song it was from. Google was no help either. Then today, I realised it was a line from the trio's short-lived reggae track Hear Me Cry.

So, I decided, rather than let Google deceive me again and try to tell me it was a Jonas Brothers song, I thought I'd post here the song's lyrics, as transcribed by me from the above video, for me and others to find when our memory lets us down.
Of course, there's parts of it I'm not sure about, so just let me know if you hear any parts differently and I'll modify my post. \Cheers

Heaven only knows what’s wrong or right
We sure as hell ain’t gonna figure it out tonight
For all that will come
For all that will pass
Tell me man, what you think will last?

Cuz people wandering by a-doubting what it all just means
They gonna find it from a god, they gonna find it from a machine
For all that we’ve searched
For all that we've sold
Tell me man, what you think we know?

Because I’ve been wandering around for so many years
I know you hear me cry
I'm bogged down by the mud from my own tears
I know you hear me cry
Well just the time I’m in(?) rocks me to my core
I know you hear me cry
Won’t someone please me
Won’t someone please me what’s going on

[Bass break]

Spending all our time protecting what we’ve got
But when we go, you know, all those things do not
For all that we’ve worked
For all that we wear
When did what we possess become our jails?

Cuz it’s all just looking a little hairy from down here
We all be looking for love but we taking it apart with fear
For all that we’ve loved
For all that we’ve lost
Tell me man, what you think’s the cost?

Because I’ve been wandering around for so many years
I know you hear me cry
I'm bogged down by the mud from my own tears
I know you hear me cry
Well just the time I’m in(?) rocks me to my core
I know you hear me cry
Won’t someone please me
Won’t someone please me what’s going on

[Guitar solo]

Heaven only knows what’s wrong or right
We sure as hell ain’t gonna figure it out tonight
For all that we’ve loved
For all that we’ve lost
Tell me man, what you think’s the cost?

Because I’ve been wandering around for so many years
I know you hear me cry
I'm being bogged down by mud from my own tears
I know you hear me cry
Well just the time I’m in(?) rocks me to my core
I know you hear me cry
Won’t someone please me
Won’t someone please me what’s going on

Won’t someone tell me
Won’t someone tell me
Won’t someone tell me
Yeah

Aptly titled “Tin Shed Tales”, the tour takes in capital cities and a host of regional areas; these shows will be a rare opportunity to hear the music of this iconic artist in a raw and intimate setting.

John will be bringing his Tin Shed along for the ride, decked out with a collection of personal art pieces, old skool skateboards and vintage guitars, these items are laid out in his shed at home where he draws inspiration for his art and songwriting.

The Tin Shed Tales tour will feature special guests Felicity Groom and Mama Kin, who will open and participate in the shows (see list of shows below).

In December last year John decided to put on a surprise concert for his fans in Perth. The unplugged acoustic show was announced a day before the performance and with only 300 seats available it sold out in under seven minutes. He shared many anecdotes with the audience and performed songs from his vast catalogue spanning across all five albums.
Thus the “Tin Shed Tales” concept came to life.

Check out ‘Revolution’ taken from the “Tin Shed Tales” special Christmas performance at the Subiaco Arts Centre - WA

Regarding the forthcoming tour John Butler said today,

"I'm really excited about this tour.
Dream come true?

Kia ora fellow forumers

I know many of you have been lucky enough to meet the band after gigs in the past, and I was wondering if there is any chance in the world I might be able to fulfil my long time dream of meeting the band? I will be seeing them for the first time next month when they play Daisy Banks Vineyard in Martinborough. (So excited)

I figure I'd better introduce myself properly in case someone sees this. I busk, playing acoustic rootsy blues guitar (heavily influenced by JB) out on the streets of Palmerston North. I've been busking regularly over the past few years and now am moving into University where Im studying Geography and Maori studies. I hope to make my mark on paptuanuku, mother earth through one day working for an organisation that protects the land and the fragile natural environment with the help of local Iwi and traditional values such as Kaitiakitanga (stewardship and balance between earth and her people), or perhaps as a musician (only pipe-dreaming really).

I would be over the moon If I was able to thank my heroes in person next month.

If anyone in the band or management reads this I would like to thank you all for keeping the good spirit growing around the globe through the music and message. And for coming out to Aotearoa next month. Much, much love respect to you all. Peace

Kia ora forum folks,

less than a month now till the John Butler Trio hit Aotearoa again on what I believe is their first tour here. Super excited that I will at least be seeing them perform at last, I missed out on the last few gigs because they were R18 or to far to travel. Anyone else on the forum going to see these shows?

April Uprising Vinyl Review

Hey Fellas
I've been listening to my April Uprising vinyl on repeat since the day I got it. They seemed to have changed a few things up that I was wondering about. First of all I notice that on the liner notes on Side B that Satisfy Segue is listed on the liner notes but isn't on the vinyl. Must have taken that away due to the length of each side of the vinyl no doubt?

However since this is missing, Side D is getting much more spins because of the 3 bonus songs (the full Satisfy song is included on D if you weren't sure). I wish I'm Ready had have been included on the vinyl though because I love that tune as well... but that's not a big deal since I have my 45" of One Way Road and it's just on the rear end of that!

I have to tell you.... Gone is one of the BEST songs I have ever heard John Butler write. The piano is a nice switch up at the end of the song, and to include riffs of previews JBT songs was brilliant! Kudos and good on ya for throwing that on the vinyl John!

Does anyone else thing the 24 bit remaster gives a bit more depth when listening on a needle? Maybe I'm just crazy and thing I can hear the difference, but I do prefer the sound of vinyl over cd (still have my large collection of classic artists that I play on a daily basis.

Anyway those are my quick thoughts on the vinyl that I wanted to share and wondered if any else had noticed that the Satisfy Segue was missing from the vinyl. Cheers!
