I can finger pick quite competently and strum fine but when it comes to flat picking like the man himself I fail miserably...The problem Is I try to watch the technique But it's so bizzare...It does not look like strict alternate picking like say for an electric guitar solo/tremolo picking cause his hand moves that much, it looks more like...localized strumming but the string hes doing it on rings out over the other he may/may not be hitting with this odd strum/picking....I have consulted other people on you tube and they say its as i say for when they play they sort of strum in the area...but im not sure. Anything I try just doesn't sound right or sounds strangled as my nail gets caught
The only other possible problem is I'm attempting this on a 6 string rather than the fabled 11-string but i dont want to blame this on the instrument...For reference here is what i am on about

I've started right at the points i am on about
Any Insight or opinion is welcome cause I cant approach this haphazardly without a specific way to practice on doing this properly
cheers
